Wild Ozark Native Pecan
The name comes from the Algonquin word "pacane" meaning " nut so hard as to require a stone to crack." The Native pecan has had many centuries to evolve to its present state as a staple nut in the American diet. All native trees are genetically individual, thus every native pecan tree produces a nut that is its own variety with its own unique flavor. Native pecans have a high oil content, which contributes to their rich taste and beautiful coloring.
Wild pecans were a major food source for Native American tribes during autumn, and Native Americans are thought to have first cultivated the pecan tree.
Pecan culture, like most tree cropping systems, is inherently more sustainable relative to other forms of agriculture. Native pecan groves are often managed both for nuts and for grazing of livestock, generating additional income from the land as well as enhancing nutrient cycling in the soil and air. The Missouri Pecan Growers is truly an amazing collaboration of people, be sure to look at their grower/harvester page.
